Will They Never Tire?

There’s a phone scam going around wherein you pick up your phone and a robot asks, “Can you hear me?”

If you make the mistake of answering “Yes” they’ll use the recording of you saying “Yes” to sell you stuff without you being aware of the deceit. They do this by editing the recording and simply inserting your “Yes” when asked if you want whatever it is they are “offering”.

We’ve never gotten a call like this just because we never pick up phone calls from numbers we don’t recognize, but if you haven’t heard of this scam and you’re in the habit of picking up calls from unknown phone numbers, just watch out for this.

And for an update on the silly Safeway Monopoly game, we opened up all of our tickets from the parents’ last grocery trip (they brought home 32 😀 ) and even though we haven’t won any of the prizes on the board, Safeway does include “instant winners” in their tickets sometimes. Sometimes you get some money off something you can buy in their store and sometimes you get an item for free.

So far, the instant winners we have are, among other things, free sour cream, free salt, a discount on batteries and coffee, free bagel or doughnut (2), and a free cooking course.

Who thinks anyone ever wins big?

Oh No, Not Again

dscf3771It appears that Safeway has decided that it’s that time again. Time to break out the old Monopoly game in order to get people to buy more stuff. If you don’t remember how this game works, we wrote about it here. Long story short, the more you buy, the more chance you have of winning one of their prizes, which range from $5 cash to a $1,000,000 vacation home.

And the best part is, you hardly ever get anything, so you end up just getting your hopes up for nothing, only to have them dashed to pieces. Then you swear that you’re not going to play the little games anymore. But on the slight off-chance that you do get something… You have to try, right?

That’s pretty much how these games go. But we might win something this year. This might be the year, and we’ve got to try. Look forward to hearing about all of our disappointment!

We’ve been shopping at Safeway steadily (we always shop at Safeway) since the began running their new promotion. We’ve managed to already acquire 70 stamps and have turned them in for a shiny new 8.25″ non-stick Farberware pan. So far, we can confirm that it is, in fact, non-stick. Admittedly, we don’t use small pans on a daily basis, but our last small Farberware pan, though it started out non-stick, had become quite – what’s the word – non-non-stick. We have, of course, thrown out that one since we came to possess our new one. I think we’ll find that having a slightly more functional small pan is nice.

We’ve still got some time before January 3, 2017, which is when the promotion ends, so we’re starting to collect 120 stamps in order to get a six quart covered stockpot. After that, I guess we’ll see how much time we have left 🙂

I have now returned from my blog break and will hopefully be publishing more regularly now. To begin with, I’d like to alert everyone of a new Safeway… uh, thing. I’m really not sure what to call it, but we have written about this phenomenon before: it’s basically Safeway’s version of Green Stamps! For every ten dollars that you spend at a participating Safeway, you get one stamp. Once you have saved up a certain number of stamps, you can exchange them for a prize. Last time, you could get anything from a 3.5″ paring knife for 30 stamps to a 20 piece flatware set for 160 stamps. We got a nice 20 piece flatware set which we now save for special occasions and also a set of nice steak knives. All of the prizes were from Cuisinart.

This time, the prizes are various pots and pans from Farberware. While we’re not personally the biggest fans of Farberware products, they’re free! (if you shop at Safeway anyway, which we do) Why not collect the stamps? We’ll be trying to save enough stamps for both a 6-quart covered stockpot and a small skillet. To get both, we’ll need to save 180 stamps by January 17, 2017, when the offer ends. To be honest, though, that really won’t be difficult; we buy a lot of groceries. We’ll have to update you on our progress every once in a while.

In any case, if you do shop at Safeway (or even if you don’t), free things are never bad, are they? And even if you don’t need more pots and pans, you can always give your newly acquired ones to someone who does!

We Might Have Won…

DSCF3345In our area, Safeway’s rendition of the game of Monopoly is over. We were participating pretty much for a while, but after not winning anything but some coffee, we kind of dropped it. We still kept the tickets, though, and they accumulated quite quickly. After a couple of months, we had well over a hundred tickets in a box!

Who knows? We might have won something had we opened them all 🙂
